Early career
My career in health and social care has been both rewarding and fulfilling. I started at the age of 16 as a Domestic Assistant in a hospital in Shetland before progressing to a Nursing Auxiliary role at 17 and I have never looked back.
Career journey
I spent many years working in the private sector in a variety of settings and roles, including supervisory positions. In 2021, I saw an advert for a Social Care Worker role at the Mackenzie Centre in Inverness. The centre had such a fantastic reputation that I decided to apply and was delighted to be successful.
Current role
Through hard work, continuous learning and a passion for making a difference in people’s lives, I progressed within the service and now work as the Deputy Manager at the Mackenzie Centre.

Key reflections
Looking back, I am proud of the journey I have taken and the opportunities I have had along the way. Working in health and social care has allowed me to build a rewarding career while supporting others and making a positive difference in their lives.
Advice for others
Be open to opportunities, work hard and keep learning. You never know where a role may lead. Working for the NHS has given me the chance to grow professionally while making a real difference to people’s lives, and I am very grateful for the opportunities and security it has provided.
