Deirdrie's story

Early career

My name is Deirdrie, and I started my career in health and social care working in the independent sector. When a part-time Social Care Assistant opportunity came up at Mackenzie Day Centre, I applied and immediately felt it was the right place for me. During my interview, I saw people enjoying music and movement sessions, heard laughter throughout the building, and received a warm welcome. I remember telling my husband that even if I didn't get the job, I would volunteer there because it felt like somewhere I belonged.

Career journey

After securing the role, I spent nearly a year balancing two jobs, working both in the community and at Mackenzie Day Centre. It was challenging, but I was determined to continue my NHS journey. When a full-time Social Care Assistant post became available, I successfully applied and continued building my skills, knowledge and confidence. Through hard work, dedication and a commitment to learning, I progressed into a Social Care Worker role, which was a significant milestone in my career.

Current role

As a Social Care Worker, I am proud to work in a service where people can truly be themselves. Mackenzie Day Centre is filled with care, fun and laughter, and our team is committed to creating a positive experience for everyone who attends. We support each other every day and work together to achieve the best outcomes.

Key reflections

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is the importance of perseverance. Career progression does not always happen immediately, but each experience provides an opportunity to learn and grow. The support of colleagues and a positive working environment have been invaluable throughout my journey.
