Chris Sharp

Early career

Chris began his professional journey in Edinburgh aged 17, working in hospitality. Over a decade, he progressed from pot washer to Assistant Head Chef while studying culinary skills at college. Alongside his hospitality career, he fulfilled his dream of joining the military by becoming an Army Reserve, experiences that strengthened his skills in both leadership and service.

Career journey

The COVID pandemic marked a turning point in Chris's career. While working in a private hospital, he recognised a shift in his passions and wanted to make a more direct difference. He volunteered to help establish COVID testing, working closely with infection control and public health teams for two years. This led to a role in pre-assessment, where he gained valuable clinical skills across medical and surgical departments.

Current role

Chris currently works as a Band 4 Medical Assistant Practitioner at Raigmore Hospital. After applying "on a whim," he was offered the role within weeks and relocated to the Highlands. With support from mentors and colleagues, he completed a Professional Development Award (PDA) in Promoting Enhanced Professional Practice through Fife College while supporting patients and colleagues across the hospital.

Key reflections

Chris discovered that his passion extended beyond cooking to proactively supporting those receiving care. He found joy in working alongside some of the finest healthcare professionals at Raigmore and learned that transferable skills from hospitality and the military - such as teamwork, discipline, and service - translate remarkably well into healthcare.

Advice for others

Looking ahead, Chris plans to begin a Nursing degree with the Open University in February 2026, with the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse and ultimately an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. He encourages others:

"I sincerely encourage individuals with a passion for health or social care to pursue their chosen career paths with determination to reach your career goals."
