Ewan's story

Early career

After finishing at Oban High School, I knew I wanted to go to university but wasn't entirely sure which career path to follow. With a range of options open to me, I chose to study Law, recognising that the degree would provide a strong foundation and open the door to many different opportunities. During university holidays, I worked full-time at my local Tesco store in Oban. Although very different from my future career, it helped me develop valuable skills in customer service, communication and teamwork that have stayed with me throughout my professional life.

Career journey

Following graduation, I developed a strong interest in international relations, international law and global affairs, leading me to complete a master's degree in International Relations. My ambition was to work in diplomacy or international development, and I applied for a number of roles with the Foreign Office and organisations such as the United Nations. Although I was unsuccessful, the experience taught me resilience and encouraged me to look for opportunities elsewhere in public service.

I joined Glasgow City Council as a Graduate Project Manager, where I spent three years developing skills in project management, budgeting, planning and decision-making while working on major infrastructure and emergency response projects. In 2020, I moved to the Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership as a Contracts and Demand Management Officer, gaining extensive experience in procurement, contract management and supply chain operations.

Current role

In late 2022, I was appointed Deputy Head of Procurement for NHS Highland. I lead teams responsible for procurement, contracting, supplier relationship management and compliance activities across the organisation. The role allows me to combine legal, commercial and leadership skills while supporting healthcare services across the region.

Key reflections

Looking back, I never expected to work in procurement or within NHS Highland. However, every role has provided valuable experience and transferable skills that helped prepare me for the next opportunity. Setbacks and unexpected career turns often led to the most rewarding outcomes.
