Gender identity services, referral and signposting to further support and information.

Gender dysphoria is when your gender doesn’t match the sex you were assigned at birth. This can cause discomfort, be upsetting and affect emotions, relationships and wellbeing.

Some people make changes - like their name or appearance, or seek specialist support - but everyone’s journey is unique.

Gender services

Advice is different for the Highland area and the Argyll and Bute area.

Gender services for people living in the Highland area

People over 18 years old, living in the Highland area and seeking advice and treatment for gender dysphoria should ask their GP for referral to the Highland Sexual Health gender identity clinic.

Gender services for people living in the Argyll and Bute area

People who require these services in Argyll and Bute are referred to the Sandyford service in Glasgow.

Adult gender service

For people aged 18 and over who are experiencing gender dysphoria, specialist gender services are provided by Sandyford in Glasgow. The service aims to provide comprehensive and compassionate care tailored to each person’s needs.  

To access adult gender services, you will need a referral from a GP or Adult Mental Health Services first. Please speak with one of these contacts in the first instance if you have any concerns or questions about your gender, or gender dysphoria. They will then give you an initial assessment to see if the service is a good fit for you. There is currently a long wait for this service.

  • LGBT Helpline Scotland - providing emotional support and information to the entire diversity of the LGBTQ+ community across Scotland

Young person gender service

This service at Sandyford offers specialist support for anyone under 18 living in Scotland and experiencing gender dysphoria. This service will help you explore your feelings and talk you through options that feel right for you.

To access gender services for young people, you will need a referral from a GP, paediatric services or Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) first. They’ll talk with you about how you’re feeling and whether a referral to the service is appropriate for you. There is currently a long wait for this service.
