About the Service
Health Protection is one of the responsibilities of NHS Highland, and it encompasses protecting the population from the threats to health from the external environment.
There is particular emphasis on protection from infectious diseases, which have been a threat to people’s survival, health and well-being since human life began. Many factors in the modern world have increased the risk of infectious disease: global travel and trade, micro-organisms which become resistant to treatment, increases in the numbers of people with weakened immune systems, and changes in the environment and land use.
