Important: Accident and Emergency (A&E) and 999 services

In an emergency, call 999 or go to the nearest Accident & Emergency department.

Local A&E departments across Highland and Argyll and Bute are open for those who have a life-threatening emergency.

It’s important to remember that A&E and 999 services should only be used when people are seriously ill or injured.

Important: Call NHS 24 on 111 for immediate advice

This is your quickest way to get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Contact NHS 24 by phoning 111 if:

  • you think you need A&E but it’s not life-threatening
  • your GP practice or dental practice is closed and you’re too ill to wait for them to reopen
  • you need urgent mental health support

What happens after calling NHS 24?

Where a further medical assessment is required, NHS 24 will refer you to the most appropriate healthcare professional. If they think you need A&E, they will advise you to attend A&E directly, or refer you to your local NHS team for further assessment

What’s involved?

NHS 24 may arrange for you to be called back for a phone or video appointment with a healthcare professional in the first instance, where clinically appropriate.

What happens if I need to visit A&E?

If necessary, a time will be arranged for you to arrive at hospital to keep you safe and get the right care at the right time. If it's not necessary for you to attend A&E, you'll be helped to access the care you need as quickly, safely and as close to home as possible.
