Dr MacKinnon Memorial Hospital - Broadford Hospital Dr MacKinnon Memorial Hospital

An enhanced Community Hospital which provides a range of acute care inclusive of acute assessment, stabilisation and transfer.  Because Raigmore Hospital is 2 to 3 hours away by road [Skye is now connected to the mainland by the infamous Bridge] we are inevitably responsible for the management of at least the first few hours of any conceivable event.

Our aim is to build a team of contemporary generalists. Our current medical "person spec" is for a  general practitioner [in most cases vocationally trained] – who in addition has some anaesthetic experience – or is prepared to undergo such training, and who will be additionally trained in Emergency Life Support – because they will have to field critically ill cases such as head injuries and subarachnoid haemorrhage. Our doctors also receive additional annual training and refreshing to enable them to safely assess a much wider range of material than would be expected in the larger teams found in urban areas.  We also require our nursing staff to be flexible generalists, in addition to developing individual specialist skills.

Around 1999, an  extensive consultation exercise resulted in the realisation by the community that contemporary medical practice demanded that a lot of acute hospital care now requires the resources of a multi-consultant General Hospital, and that it was impossible to furnish this for a resident population of 13,000. A lot of care would have to be provided by travelling to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. However, Inverness is 100 miles from one end of the island, and 150 from the other. The aspiration of the community was to maintain an A&E service and to keep in the hospital those patients who could still safely be cared for locally. A visiting Surgical Service was agreed.

As a Community Hospital we work closely with all the members of the Community Health and Social Services.
