About neuropsychology

Neuropsychological assessment may help identify cognitive problems following a range of neurological diagnoses including:

acquired brain injury
epilepsy
multiple sclerosis
Huntington’s disease

The team also supports specialist rehabilitation after major injury, through Major trauma psychology as part of the Major trauma team.

Goal-based rehabilitation aims to minimise difficulties and teach skills and techniques to help cope and adapt to cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes following injury or diagnosis.

Self-help resources, group or individual interventions may be offered.

Attending appointments

Face-to-face appointments

You may be invited to Raigmore Hospital for a face-to-face outpatient appointment.

It is a good idea to bring your appointment letter and show it at the reception desk.

Most appointments on site will be in the outpatient department. The outpatient entrance is one of the first buildings you see on your right after turning into the hospital site. Enter the outpatient clinic and ask at the reception desk for neuropsychology and you will be guided to the right clinic waiting room.

Dr Ruth Sumpter is lead of the Neuropsychology team, with more than ten years experience working as a consultant clinical neuropsychologist. Dr Sumpter has extensive clinical and research expertise in acquired brain injury across the lifespan, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and remote service provision.
