People in Caithness will be able to access all community-based health and social care services using a single dedicated phone number.

The new service, which will start on Tuesday August 8, is aimed at making it easier and quicker for those in need of assistance to get the help they require.

Experienced staff will be available to answer calls on the 0345 8509413 number between 9am-5pm, from Monday to Friday

They will triage and process referrals for all health and social care services throughout Caithness.

People will be able to self-refer themselves for assistance using the phone line.  It can also be used by family members and friends of those requiring services, as well as GPs and nurse practitioners, the police, Highland Council staff, hospitals and third sector organisations.

The Single Point of Access initiative is a key part of wider proposals to redesign, modernise and improve health and social care services in Caithness.

Christian Nicolson, NHS Highland’s Caithness District Manager, said: “This new initiative is aimed at ensuring that all those who need assistance and support receive the right care from the right service.

“It will hopefully cut out confusion and worry for people over identifying which services they need and how to contact them.

“The team will provide a comprehensive triage, referral and information service for people throughout Caithness to make sure people are directed to the appropriate service to meet their needs.

“We hope this will contribute considerably to other, wider initiatives intended to help people live safely and independently at home for as long as possible.”

As part of the service, staff will be able to put people in touch with third sector groups and services in their area to help prevent social isolation and encourage them to remain active and engaged within their communities.

Calls from landlines to the new phone number will be charged at local rates. Rates for mobile phone users will vary depending on their supplier, but they will be offered a call back from the service.
