Ross shire breastfeeding peer support appeal

17/01/2012   |  Mid Highland

Mums from the Ross shire area who have an interest in breastfeeding, and breastfed their own child, are being asked to join the local Breastfeeding Peer Supporters Group so they can offer new mums the benefit of their experience.

NHS Highland has peer support groups throughout the area who support new mums coming out of hospital with advice and tips on breastfeeding as well as offering help and advice to expectant mums, and the group from Ross shire are looking for new members.

Bev Green, Peer Support Training Coordinator, explained that peer supporters are a valued support network to new mums.

She said: “Some mums can find it quite difficult, particularly in the early days, and sometimes all that is needed to encourage them to carry on is some friendly support and advice from someone who has done it themselves.

“The volunteers we have do a fantastic job and we would are looking for new volunteers to become a valued part of our team by helping breastfeeding mothers.”

“For those interested we offer Breastfeeding Peer Support Training, which will teach you the skills and knowledge to support local breastfeeding women.”

Ms Green goes on to explain that there are many benefits to breastfeeding for both mum and baby. Benefits for the baby may include reducing the risk of developing obesity and diabetes. For the mother, they include a reduced risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

If you are interested in becoming a peer supporter please contact Bev Green on 01463 704842 or by email beverley.green1@nhs.net.
