In addition to dealing with above normal demand the NHS also provides Out of Hours cover for the public holidays which this year will see GP services closed for four days two weeks in a row.
Out of Hours Development Manager Tracy Ligema said: “We’re keeping a close eye on the number of cases of winter illness that we are seeing and have plans in place to bring in additional staff as required to deal with increased demand. Many calls to out of hours services at this time of year could be avoided with proper preparation so we are asking people to help us with our busiest time of year by getting ready for winter. This will ensure that we are able to deal with the most urgent patients more quickly and after all, no-one wants to be sick during the holidays.”
The important messages are:
- If you have a repeat prescription, make sure you have enough medication to see you over the holidays.
- If you are 65 or over or have breathing or heart problems get a flu vaccine from your local health centre.
- Visit your local pharmacy and get advice on which over the counter medicines you should have to hand just in case for example; cold and flu remedies, preparations for diarrhoea and indigestion.
Ms Ligema said: “NHS 24 and NHS Highland’s out of hours services are there if you need advice or help over the holidays so if you or a member of your family does take ill you have someone to call.”
NHS 24’s number is: 08454 242424
