A doctor working in the Emergency Department at Lorn and Islands Hospital has been awarded a newly established national qualification recognising excellence in remote and rural medicine.
Dr Vicki Robertson, a Rural Emergency Physician at Lorn and Islands Hospital Emergency Department, has successfully achieved the General Medical Council’s (GMC) “Rural and Remote Credential”, awarded on 3 May 2026.
The Rural and Remote Credential has been introduced to formally recognise the advanced and varied skills required of doctors working in remote and rural healthcare settings, where clinicians often provide a broader scope of care than in traditional emergency medicine or general practice roles.
Dr Rebecca Helliwell, Medical Director for Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership, said: "We are pleased to see Dr Robertson recognised with this important new GMC credential. Delivering healthcare in remote and rural communities requires a highly specialised and adaptable skillset, and this qualification reflects the dedication, expertise and professionalism that Vicki delivers to patients.
“This achievement is also a reflection of the high standard of care delivered by the team within the Emergency Department at Lorn and Islands Hospital, and our ongoing commitment to supporting excellence in rural healthcare.”
To achieve the credential, Dr Robertson compiled an extensive professional portfolio demonstrating her experience, expertise and practical skillset in rural and remote medicine. The portfolio was reviewed by a panel of senior doctors, who confirmed she had met the high standards required for the qualification.
Dr Robertson, Rural emergency physician, Lorn and Islands Hospital emergency department, said: "Working in a rural and remote environment requires adaptability, broad clinical knowledge and close teamwork. I’m delighted to have achieved this credential and to help highlight the unique skills involved in delivering high-quality care in rural communities.”
The achievement reflects the ongoing commitment of the Lorn and Islands Hospital Emergency Department team to delivering expert care across remote and island communities in the Highlands and Islands region.
