David Gillan was just three years old when the COVID-19 pandemic began, but even at that young age he was determined to help others.
During lockdown, he created rainbow pictures for neighbours’ windows and helped make treat boxes for emergency service staff, leaving them safely at doors when people were unable to enter public buildings.
Since 2020, David has continued this tradition, delivering treat boxes to Cowal Community Hospital’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) department every Easter and Christmas. When David receives treats that he cannot eat himself, he ensures they are added to the boxes so that others can enjoy them.
David and his family have also spoken warmly about the care and compassion shown by A&E consultant Dr Colin Barrett , whom David especially likes to visit when delivering the boxes. Dr Barrett is praised for his patience, kindness and the time he always takes for David and other patients. When David was very unwell at a young age, Dr Barrett acted quickly to support his transfer to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.
During the pandemic, David dressed up every Thursday as different “local heroes” - including police officers, doctors, ambulance drivers, firefighters and ferry captains - to take part in Clap for the NHS. His efforts did not go unnoticed, and he has since been recognised by his local school, community organisations and national events, including being spotlighted at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
David continues to bring joy to others by Highland dancing for nurses, patients and residents in hospitals and care homes across the area. At Christmas, he also donated bags of toys to children in the hospital and performed for the staff on the wards.
Evan Beswick, Chief Officer for Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership said: “David’s story is truly inspiring. His kindness, generosity and determination to give something back to the NHS and care staff over so many years have touched everyone who has met him. He embodies the very best of our communities, and on behalf of all our staff, I want to thank David and his family for the kindness and positivity they continue to bring.”
Dr Colin Barrett, Clinical Lead for Accident and Emergency (A&E) at Cowal Community Hospital said: “David is an exceptional young person. His thoughtfulness and compassion for others are remarkable, and his visits bring a huge lift to both patients and staff. It has been a privilege to see the happiness he brings through such simple but meaningful acts of kindness.”
