Shingles vaccinations
On this page
Adults in Scotland are offered routine vaccination for shingles at age 65, or 70 or over.
Important: About shingles vaccinations
The shingles vaccine helps to protect people from shingles (herpes zoster).
Find out when the vaccine is given and how it works, at NHS inform.
Eligibility, and changes to the shingles vaccination programme (video)
Use the shingles vaccine eligibility by age calculator 2023-24.
You’re eligible for the free shingles vaccine if you were aged 65, or 70 (or over) on 1 September 2023.
This excludes people who were aged 66 to 69 on this date. NHS Scotland has started to offer the shingles vaccine to a much larger group of people, to help protect people at an earlier age. We can't do this all at once so it needs to be rolled out on a phased basis over 10 years.
The vaccine will continue to be offered to anyone aged 71 to 79 who has not previously been vaccinated.
Your local immunisation team will contact you when you’re eligible to get the shingles vaccine - please wait to be contacted.
Two doses
You need to have 2 doses of the shingles vaccine for it to be effective.
You’ll be offered your second dose 2 to 12 months after your first dose.
