From dietitian to Director of Public Health - Jennifer's journey shows how curiosity and courage can shape a career across nations and sectors.
"I never saw myself being a Director of Public Health. I never had a 'plan' in terms of my career as others did, but what I have always been, is curious."
Jennifer Davies, Director of Public Health
Early career
Jennifer began her career in healthcare in 1992 as a dietitian in South Wales. Unlike many of her colleagues, she never had a detailed career plan mapped out. Instead, what drove her forward was an enduring curiosity about opportunities and possibilities. This openness to exploration would become the defining characteristic of her remarkable career journey.
Career journey
Over more than 30 years, Jennifer's curiosity led her across three nations and multiple sectors. She explored opportunities in NHS trusts, local authorities, and universities before moving into the private sector with Bupa, where she set up a global Public Health and Behavioural Insights unit. Throughout her journey, she took on roles even when she wasn't sure she could do them, learning valuable lessons at each step.
Current role
Jennifer now serves as Director of Public Health at NHS Highland. She was drawn to the role by the Health Board's ambition and commitment to prevention and population health. Scotland's leadership in addressing health inequalities and driving forward integration of health and social care was particularly attractive to her, and she wanted to learn from how things are done in the Highlands.

Advice for others
