Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) midwife Jan Smith was on hand on the 4th of January to welcome Mid Argyll’s first birth of the year. Little did she know that history was about to repeat itself.

Both proud new parents Katie Poppleton and Andrew Innis to their surprise were greeted in Accident and Emergency (A&E) by the same midwife who delivered both of them.

Jan Smith, Mid Argyll Midwife said: “It is a huge privilege to help babies into the world and each one of those babies and families are special to me. Throughout my rural midwifery career, I have delivered many babies across Mid Argyll. In this case, this birth has been an overwhelming experience when I realised that I have actually delivered two generations of families.

“I would like to take this opportunity again to congratulate Katie and Andrew on the birth of their beautiful son Cammie.”

Katie’s scheduled birth plan included being induced on the 8 January at the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Paisley. On 4 January at about 4:30 pm, she felt pain-free tingling in her abdomen and did not relate the sensation to being in labour. Later that evening, at 8:50 pm she arrived at Mid Argyll Hospital realising that she was in the later stages of labour. At 9:26 pm in the A&E Department, she gave birth to her son Cammie David Innis weighing 7lbs.

Katie Poppleton said: “Andrew and I were amazed when the midwife Jan Smith who had delivered me in 2003 and Andrew in 2005 arrived at A&E to deliver our son. We would like to express our most sincere thanks to the A&E staff and Jan for taking care of all of us, everyone was fantastic.”
