Raigmore Hospital surgeon Mr Andrew Kent has won the Global Citizenship Award at the Scottish Health Awards 2022.

He was presented with the award at the event held last Thursday, 3 November.

Andrew has devoted years to humanitarian healthcare, ensuring patients who are vulnerable and in danger receive the treatment they deserve. This year, he has worked in Ukraine for a total of 10 weeks to help with the refugee crisis. Throughout his career he has been involved in several other missions across the globe, with UK-Med in Beirut and Eswatini, the HALO Trust in Afghanistan, the World Health Organisation in Somalia and Yemen, and the Primary Trauma Care Foundation in Uganda and India. He hopes to return to Ukraine early next year.

Andrew, who works as a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, said: “As a surgeon it has always been my duty to provide healthcare to patients and give them the treatment they need, no matter who they are or where they come from. I’m very pleased for myself and for my work colleagues who have always supported me in my humanitarian missions – sometimes at very short notice. Thank you to my wife and our four kids who have never questioned my desire to make these sacrifices, and thank you to the Scottish Health Awards for honouring me with this award.”

Boyd Robertson, NHS Highland Board Chair, said: “This is a thoroughly deserved award for Andrew, who has so selflessly demonstrated over many years his devotion to his profession and has gone way above and beyond to treat patients around the world in the most challenging and unimaginable of situations. We in NHS Highland are proud to have staff of Andy’s calibre and distinction and we congratulate him on this this very special recognition in the Scottish Health Awards for which over 750 individuals were nominated.”

Andrew has worked at Raigmore Hospital since 2002. Previously he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps for 18 years, including various hostile and austere deployments. Andrew will give a brief introduction to a charity concert for Ukraine at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness on Wednesday 16 November 2022.
