Orthotics
On this page
The Orthotics service provides specialist assessment, design, and fitting of orthoses - medical devices that support, align, or improve the function of a part of the body.
These may include insoles, braces, splints, footwear adaptations, or orthopaedic footwear.
Our goal is to help you move more comfortably, manage pain, and regain independence in daily activities.

We are located in clinic 7 of the outpatients area in Zone 1 of Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
About our service
The Orthotics department is based in the outpatients department at Raigmore Hospital, where we have an on-site manufacturing facility.
Many of our orthotic devices are custom-made or adapted by skilled orthotic technicians and Orthotists on-site. This allows us to provide a quicker turnaround, ensure precise fitting, and make adjustments efficiently when needed.
Our team works with patients of all ages and with a wide range of conditions, helping to improve stability, comfort, and confidence in movement.
What we do
Our qualified Orthotists are registered healthcare professionals who assess how you move, identify areas of weakness or pain, and recommend or design orthoses to support you.
We work closely with other hospital teams, including:
- physiotherapy
- podiatry
- orthopaedics
- neurology
- diabetes care
... to ensure you receive the best possible treatment for your needs.
Common reasons for referral include:
- foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back pain
- post-surgical support or rehabilitation
- neurological conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, or multiple sclerosis
- diabetic foot care
- limb length differences or joint deformities
- arthritis and age-related joint issues
Every orthosis we provide is carefully selected or made to ensure comfort, safety, and the best possible fit for your condition.
How to access our service
You can access the Orthotics department through a referral from your:
- GP
- hospital consultant
- physiotherapist
- podiatrist
- other healthcare professional
Existing patients who have been seen in the Orthotics department within the past two years can self-refer for review or adjustments relating to the same condition or issue.
Your appointment
What to expect
At your first appointment, the Orthotist or orthotic assistant will:
- discuss your medical history and current symptoms
- assess your posture, movement, and footwear
- take measurements, impressions, or digital scans if a custom device is needed
- explain your options and answer any questions
Depending on your needs, your orthosis may be fitted during your first visit or made to order. We’ll always make sure you understand how to use and care for your device before you leave.
Preparing for your appointment
Please bring:
- your appointment letter or reference number
- any current orthoses or insoles you are using
- your usual footwear (especially shoes you wear most often)
- comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and access to the area being assessed
If you are unable to attend your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer the slot to another patient.
Follow-up appointments
Follow-up visits may be needed to check the fit, comfort, and performance of your orthosis. Adjustments can often be made during these appointments to ensure the best outcome.
