About the blood sciences service

The blood sciences departments at Raigmore Hospital (Inverness), Caithness General Hospital (Wick), Belford Hospital (Fort William) and Lorn and Islands Hospital (Oban) operate in a hub and spoke model. The laboratories all work together to provide an equitable service for all patients across the NHS Highland area.

The blood transfusion service at Raigmore is supported by one of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service laboratories, and transfusion is provided at Caithness, Belford and Lorn and Islands by NHS Highland.

The blood sciences laboratories are responsible for almost 5 million of the tests completed within the laboratories as a whole, and have recently had new state of the art equipment, manufactured by Siemens and Sysmex, installed across all sites.

The laboratory service is available 24/7/365 for blood sciences, with a wonderful team of dedicated Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants ensuring that - no matter the time of day - patient samples are processed and blood transfusion is supported. All blood testing is accessed either as a hospital inpatient or via the GP service

The laboratories also have a dedicated point of care team supporting the use of point of care testing equipment throughout the hospitals.

Clinical guidance is provided by the Consultant Haematology team and the Consultant Biochemistry team for all of the testing carried out.

See more patient information on blood, urine and other lab tests at Lab Tests Online-UK. This website is written by doctors and scientists, and produced by the Association for Laboratory Medicine in collaboration with the Royal College of Pathologists and the Institute of Biomedical Science, and provides all the information required for blood tests.
