Breaks and support
On this page
There are funding options available to unpaid carers in the Highlands to help provide much-needed breaks from their caring duties.
These funds support a wide range of activities, from short getaways to personal care treatments, helping carers recharge and maintain their wellbeing.

Short Break Services Statement
Find out more about short breaks by reading our Short Break Services Statement:
- the full report: Highland Partnership Short Break Services Statement (pdf, 2024)
- our quick guide: A Short Guide to Short Breaks - Highland (pdf, February 2025)
This statement helps unpaid carers understand what short breaks are, who can access them, and how to arrange one. It provides information on the types of short breaks available in Highland and across Scotland for both carers and the people they care for.
Carer's Wellbeing Fund
NHS Highland offers a Carer’s Wellbeing Fund specifically to provide unpaid carers with a break from their caring responsibilities. Everyone’s idea of a break is different. For some, it might be help around the house; for others, time away or the chance to try something new. The key is that it should offer real breathing space and help make caring more sustainable in the long term.
It’s not about quick fixes or luxury items - it’s about thinking carefully about what would genuinely make life a little easier and give you time for yourself again.
Connecting Carers funds
Our Carer Centre Connecting Carers offers a wide range of additional respite support specifically to provide unpaid carers with a break from their caring responsibilities.

Navigating respite options can be confusing and overwhelming, but , Connecting Carers is here to help, guide, and support you every step of the way.

Time To Be
This grant provides financial assistance to unpaid carers, enabling them to take a break and focus on their own well-being. It covers activities such as attending events, classes, or simply taking time off from caregiving responsibilities.
Short Breaks fund
This funding assists carers in accessing short breaks, allowing them to rest and rejuvenate. It can be used for various purposes, such as respite care services, holiday accommodations, or other activities that provide a temporary relief from caregiving responsibilities.
Wee Treat fund
The Wee Treat Grant offers financial support for activities that promote relaxation and personal growth. This could include hobbies, sports, or social events that provide a respite from caregiving duties.
Respitality, Short Breaks Bureau
Connecting Carers' Short Breaks Bureau provides vital time-out for unpaid carers who often struggle to find time for themselves due to financial pressures, caregiving concerns, and limited opportunities to take breaks. Through their network of hospitality and tourism providers, they offer donated short breaks to carers on their waiting list, allowing them to recharge and reconnect with loved ones.
Carefree
Carefree offers short hotel breaks for unpaid carers, giving you a chance to rest and recharge away from your caring responsibilities. Through a national network of hotel partners who donate unused rooms, carers can book a 1 or 2-night stay with a companion (not the person you care for), in a location and at a time that suits them.
To be eligible, you must be over 18 and provide more than 30 hours of unpaid care per week. There’s a one-off £33 admin fee per break, and you’ll need to cover your own travel and any other expenses.
Booking is simple via Carefree’s online platform. After signing up:
- provide proof of your caring role - this can be through evidence of receiving Carer Support Payment
- or provide details of a referee who can confirm your caring role - your local Carers Centre can provide this
