- return to practice practitioners
- internationally recruited practitioners - nurses, midwives, and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs)
- registered practitioners who are Flying Start Facilitators
- line managers and Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions (NMAHP) Leaders supporting the Flying Start process across the NHS Highland Board area
Thank you to the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Practice Education Facilitation Team for allowing us to use their Flying Start Portal format.
There is a national evaluation of the Flying Start NHS® Development Programme and as such changes may occur to this portal.

The Flying Start NHS® programme
Flying Start NHS® is the national development programme for all newly qualified nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals.
The Scottish Government requires all NQPs to complete Flying Start NHS® in their first 12 months of practice, to support the transition from a pre-registered student to a qualified, confident and capable health professional. The programme supports learning and development for all NQPs working in all sectors and settings across Scotland (Turas Learn, 2023), and whilst the programme was designed to support NQPs, the content within the programme can also be beneficial for practitioners returning to practice, and international practitioners who have begun employment in Scotland.
- Flying Start NHS: the definitive guide to the programme provides a comprehensive overview for NQPs undertaking the programme, and for Flying Start Facilitators and line managers supporting NQPs through the programme.
- Please take a moment to watch this short animation (subtitled), which outlines the Flying Start NHS® programme.
- The Flying Start NHS® Learning Hub provides supportive resources and information for NQPs, Flying Start Facilitators, line managers and Flying Start leads. Here you will find a range of resources that support both NQPs and their facilitators to get the most out of the programme.
