A new exhibition entitled 'This Is Me' will open at Eden Court Theatre from 25 January to 25 February, showcasing artworks created by young people with learning disabilities from across the Highlands.
Organised by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Learning Disabilities Team, the exhibition celebrates the many ways these young people can communicate who they are and share the world they live in.
Some of the works on display reflect a more embodied expression - art that comes from movement, feeling and curiosity. Other works are a montage of what is important to that young person as a window into their lived experience. The art also reflects the educational or therapeutic contexts in which the artist was working and where different kinds of representations can be explored.
The exhibition allows the audience to celebrate the young artists, as well as share some of the stories, questions and dilemmas that their art might bring up. The artworks invite us to pause, reflect and consider experiences that are not always easily expressed in words.
On St Valentine’s Day (14 February), a special celebration event will be held for the young artists, inviting friends, families, professionals and members of the public to share in their achievements. The event will include a performance of the musical song This Is Me, a photo booth and refreshments.
Audiences are warmly encouraged to take an active role, sharing responses and feedback about the feelings, thoughts and reactions the artwork evokes, as these are also an important part of the dialogue. These shared reflections will contribute to an ongoing conversation within CAMHS and its partners about how we listen to, understand and work alongside learning-disabled communities and those who support them.
Amelia Williamson, CAMHS Integrative Psychotherapist said: “We are so grateful to the families and school staff involved for their enthusiasm and support with curating this work, but most of all we’d like to thank all of the young people for sharing their artwork with us.”
This Is Me represents a first-of-its-kind arts-based collaboration between CAMHS and learning-disabled communities in the Highlands, opening up conversations about identity, creativity, connection and emotional expression, and what it might mean to see and be seen more fully.
